Your First Week Studying in Korea: Questions to Ask Your University and Dorm

Start here: Before asking “When does it start?”, ask “Does this guidance apply to my program?” Dates and procedures can differ by university, campus, degree program, exchange or language course, and intake semester. This is a Korean-language practice guide for finding the right information, not a universal admissions calendar. A smoother first week begins with checks before you leave home.

Before departure, find the guidance for your program. Check the university, campus, program and intake, then write down your questions. This AI-created illustration does not depict a particular university or dormitory.

1. Your program matters more than the university name alone

Do not immediately save a “new student guide” as your schedule. Undergraduate entrants, exchange students and Korean-language students may have different instructions. Search results can also show old notices for another campus or semester.

Before acting, check the university and campus, program, intake, eligible students, publication date and update date. If the audience is unclear, ask:

안녕하세요. 저는 [입학 학기]에 [캠퍼스]에서 공부할 [과정명] 학생입니다. 이 공지가 제 과정에도 적용되는지 확인 부탁드립니다.

Meaning: “Hello. I will be a student in [program] at [campus] in [intake semester]. Could you confirm whether this notice applies to my program too?” Replace the brackets with your details. 적용되다 means “apply to” here. If you have not received a student number, do not claim to have one; identify yourself using the information the university requests.

2. Check admission, classes and dorm move-in separately

개강 means classes begin. 입실 means entering and using a room; dorm notices also use 입사 for moving into the dorm. Orientation and course registration have their own schedules. Check your program’s official guidance for their order and any steps due before departure.

What to check Korean question and meaning
— Where can I find my program’s class start date?
— Could you explain my program’s orientation schedule and how to attend?
— Are there steps I need to complete before entering Korea?
— The two guides give different dates; which should I follow?

For the last question, include both notice titles and links. That makes the discrepancy much easier to check than simply asking when to come.

3. Tell the dorm your arrival time and ask about supplies

Applying for a dorm and receiving a confirmed place are different stages. Check your dorm’s official allocation results, permitted move-in dates and hours, required items and house rules. Study in Korea also directs students to university dorm offices because admission conditions and costs vary. The sentences in this article do not grant move-in permission.

This is an original practice dialogue. The 8 p.m. arrival is not a real university’s allowed move-in time.

Meaning: “Hello. My dorm place for this semester is confirmed. I expect to arrive around 8 p.m. Can I move in then?” — “Move-in is not possible at that time. Tell us your arrival date and we will explain the available options.” — “Thank you. I expect to arrive on [date]. Is there anything I should do beforehand?”

입실이 어렵습니다 means that time will not work in this situation. A promise to explain options is not approval for an exception. Wait for and check the follow-up instructions.

Ask about facilities rather than assuming they are provided:

Even official university guidance may distinguish dorm buildings or allocation types. A friend’s packing list can help you think of questions, but cannot replace your own instructions.

4. Check eligibility and dates before asking which button to press

수강신청 is course registration. Universities do not all use one system or a first-come-first-served process. First establish whether you register yourself or receive separate instructions.

Meaning: “How do students in my program register for courses? Could I receive guidance showing who is eligible, the registration period and the system to use?”

If you will register from abroad before departure, clarify the time zone:

공지에 적힌 신청 시각은 한국 시간 기준인가요?

“Is the registration time in the notice Korean time?”

When asking whether you can take a course, name your program and the course. 선수과목 means a prerequisite course. Check credit limits, eligibility and prerequisites in the relevant guidance. For exchange students, credit recognition at the home university is a separate question from permission to take a class in Korea.

If you want to change your selection, check what 정정 (“correction/change”) and 취소 (“cancellation”) mean in that process.

“I want to change a course I registered for. Where can I find my program’s change period and procedure?” Do not skip initial registration on the assumption that you can fix it later. Check whether changes are possible and under what conditions.

5. Write your details, the notice you checked, then your question

Use the contact in the notice to choose between an international office, department, language-program office or dorm office. Names and responsibilities vary. If unclear, ask “이 내용을 문의할 담당 부서를 알려 주실 수 있나요?” (“Could you tell me which department handles this?”).

This original message template has placeholders to replace:

제목: [과정명·입학 학기] 수강신청 안내 문의
안녕하세요. [캠퍼스]의 [과정명]에서 공부할 [이름]입니다.
[공지 제목과 링크]를 확인했는데, 대상에 제 과정이 포함되는지 궁금합니다.
제 과정의 수강신청 기간과 신청 방법을 확인할 수 있는 안내를 보내 주실 수 있을까요?
감사합니다.

Meaning: “Subject: [Program and intake] Question about course registration. Hello, I’m [name], and will study in [program] at [campus]. I read [notice title and link], but am unsure whether it includes my program. Could you send guidance on my registration period and procedure? Thank you.”

확인 부탁드립니다 requests confirmation; 보내 주실 수 있을까요? politely asks someone to send information. State what you understood and ask specifically about the unclear part rather than repeating questions already answered in the notice.

6. Build a checklist for your own university

Record confirmed information under these headings. If no notice is available, write “not yet confirmed” rather than inventing an expected date, then contact the office.

Field What to record
Applies to University, campus, program and intake
Official guidance Notice title, link, update date and date you checked it
Actions Each application, document submission and move-in check
Deadline Date, cutoff time and time zone
Method and contact System or submission destination, contact and reply received

Practice: what else needs checking?

Fictional situation: Min is an exchange student and finds an “undergraduate new student registration” notice. A friend says they moved into the dorm in the evening. Can Min use both pieces of information unchanged?

Example answer: No. Min must check whether the registration notice includes exchange students. Min should tell the dorm their own allocation status, arrival date and time and ask whether move-in is possible. Being at the same university does not establish identical program or dorm conditions.

Common questions

QCan I start preparing after I arrive?

Do not assume so. Before departure, check your program’s application, submission and move-in deadlines. Ask the responsible office if you cannot find them.

QMust I contact the university in Korean if my Korean is limited?

Check its stated contact languages and methods. When writing Korean, separate the program, semester and questions into short, clear sentences. This guide cannot promise a reply in any particular language.

QWhat if general study-abroad advice differs from my university notice?

Do not turn general advice into your university’s rules. Check the official notice and revisions for your program; send conflicting links to the responsible office for clarification.
